Window Installation…Ukrainian Style!!!

So, I walked into work today after not being in the office the previous afternoon and two window sills were missing in the break room and restroom.  Complete window sills, gone.  So I asked if we were getting new window.  Turns out we are, today or tomorrow.  Now, mind you, it is 25 degrees outside and snowing.  Seems crazy, right, but really life just keeps moving here, no matter what the weather.

Window replaced is fairly common place.  Many PCV’s are often trying to find are  funding or grants for the replacement of window in the schools they are working in.  My organization became the process of replacing the windows over the summer and have been replacing about five windows a month.  There are about 100 window units in my facility, so this is an ongoing process.

Here is a picture of what most old style windows look like.  They are wood framed and double pane means two windows with a four inch space between the two.  Many of the windows have been painted or sealed shut over the years and all of them do not retain heat  at all.  They are very drafty.

The entire window is literally yanked out. Plaster surrounding the window and the are around the framing is pulled all the way down to the brick structure of the building beneath.  When the new window is installed, it is packed with styrofoam and then sprayed with a yellow foam that expands and hardens into the framing.

Then the window and walls are framed in with a grey plaster.  There is a woman who works on the facilities crew in my office and she is amazing at the plastering.  The men bring in a large table for her to stand on and she mixes her plaster as it is needed.  It makes a huge mess.  But once dry, the plaster is painted, the room cleaned and the new window looks amazing.
