Soledar! Adventuring In A Salt Mine...

I did the coolest thing today!  Eileen, Andrew and I set out this morning at 6A on an adventure.  Getting up so early is no fun, but the morning makes for some beautiful pictures.

Ukraine is the summer.  I live in a beautiful country.

Turns out I was not supposed to take pictures of our guide, but I managed to get one anyway. And off we go with our yellow hats.

Inside the mine it was a steady 50 degrees and 45% humidity.  We were 300 meters below the surface of the earth and no matter what time of year the temperature and humidity stays the same.

The sculptures were incredible. Some craved right into the wall and some free standing.

It's a tree...so cool...

An indoor museum with all these really cool cutouts of individual displays.

The Soledar Salt Mine is 100% operational and provides much of the salt in the grocery stores throughout Ukraine and Europe.

The lights kept changing.

A very interesting and fun display showing Ukrainian symbolism and its relation to salt.

An indoor chapel.  Ukraine is an extremely religious country, so this seems very fitting to the culture.

Hi, Andrew and Eileen!

An art gallery...why the heck not...

At the end of the tour is this huge room.  It is much like a concert hall and even holds a symphony concert a couple of times a year. But on an average day it holds a soccer field and a bar.

Super Cool!

And we ended our day in a beer tent with salad and shaslik.  It was a fabulous day!

There is a vineyard in Artemovsk, but we never made.  Guess we will need to make another day trip.
