An Afternoon Adventure To The Border…

Yes, Yuri has a crazy sense of humor sometimes and today was no exception.  He and his mom came by my apartment to pick me up this afternoon for a drive in the country.  There is no work in most of the country today because it is the celebrated day of rest for the Easter holiday which was celebrated yesterday.  And Yuri thought a trip to the Russian border sounded fun.  And he was right.  We had a great time.

The Donetsk Siversky river looking in both directions.

Yuri’s mom, Lida and I…such a great picture.  This lady is simply amazing and it has been a great privilege to get to know her.  Thanks Yuri for sharing your mom.

This is Ukraine.  This is Ukraine is the beginning of spring.  The snow has gone, the sun shines and the fields are a deep green.  Besides the road being a bit bumpy, this could be many places in the US.  And the sight is comfortable, it helps me to not feel so disconnected.

Yuri and his mom, Lida.  Adorable!  These two are not big on the photos and smiling, but when you catch them in the moment it totally works.

Yup, I did this, much to Yuri’s dislike.  I stood in the middle of the road and took a picture of both directions.  The first is toward the Russia/Ukraine border and the other is into the Lugansk Oblast.  Such a great experience!

Turned around and headed back into Lugansk.

The great privilege of having Yuri and his car is that I can stop anywhere and take pictures.  The hills are covered in new growth and the land makes for some amazing views.

Just over a year ago and a wooden sixteenth century cathedral burned to the ground.  Yuri and his family have visited this cathedral for many years, and the loss was felt throughout the Lugansk Oblast.  The cathedral is slowly being rebuilt and it will be interesting to watch it be slowly erected.  The onion dome was being assembled before the fire and will now top the new building.  It was fascinating to see how the onion dome is put together by hand, piece by piece.

The evening light made for some wonderful photographs.

My partner in crime, Yuri.  We have a great time together and I always enjoy the adventures.  Some more than others, but this guy always brings some level of fun and excitement.
