Yula is awesome! She is the daughter of my host mom’s best friend and lives with her family about an hour north of Chernihiv. And comes to Chernihiv and stays with my host mom and I during the week. She works in Chernihiv in a bakery at a supermarket nearby my apartment.
Yula and I have worked hard to create a great friendship, even with her limited English and my limited Russian. She teaches me some Russian and I teach her some English. We can barely get through a conversation and laugh the entire time. We can often be found a few times a week sitting on my host mom’s living room floor, drinking cold beer and watching the Bachelor in Russian.
I have discovered that Yula does not have internet, so we will be keeping in touch by phone while I am in Ukraine and I am not sure how when I finally head back to the states in a few years. I am going to have to talk her into getting email when I have more words in my Russian language vocabulary. And I would love to have her come and visit me at home sometime. She is amazing and would love every minute of the experience.
