A Very Cool Excursion

I had a fabulous day today. Yuri and his mom invited me along for an excursion to the village on Lutugino about 20 kilometers from Lugansk. Yuri and Lydia were going for work, and since I was on vacation they asked me along. My packing and shopping was at a reasonable place and I could take the day away from my apartment and the city, so it was perfect timing.

I ended up spending much of the day with a woman named Lena. She is the daughter of a previous medical school classmate of Lydia's and was perfect to spend the day with. She spoke no English, so I got to practice my Russian skills.  First stop was her parents house. Both were amazing. So many grapes, tomatoes and rabbits...

There were even rabbits. And baby rabbits.  They were so cute!

And so many grapes.  Grape for wine and just to eat. Incredible and so much work...

Lena and her family were a bit concerned that I was bored.  So we hoped in the car and I got a little tour of the city with a stop at a place to look at the lake.

Next stop was the family dacha. It was about 10 minutes from their house and INCREDIBLE.  I loved it and had to share. The table area is outside, but covered by grape vines. Lena's dad, Yuri has 67 varieties of grapes. I discovered strawberries and my first sighting of blackberries in Ukraine.

I have already informed Yuri that I want this someday. I love the natural covering with the natural stone driveway.  Incredible. So much work, but so beautiful.

And more grapes...strawberries...blackberries...

On the back side of the property was is wonderful creek. From what I understand the creek used to be more river like. Can you imagine the fabulous soil this place has?

The well is very much operational and used regularly for all needed water. And here is the dacha property from the entrance. Amazing!

After much touring, tasting and wondering...it was time to eat.  And this is how Ukrainians do food.  It looks so pretty. And tastes so good. There was even homemade red wine in the mix.

Such a great day...
