Motivation Statement ~ Peace Corps Application

I am deeply motivated by the human condition, and my passion is realizing my greatest influences upon it. I believe that people are at their best when they are helping one another. Consequently, the most meaningful and defining moments in my life have occurred when I made a positive difference in a person’s life. Second, my great passion is the study of history. History is the collective memory of humankind and creates a common identity. I believe that combining my two great passions will help me to prosper as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

My natural inclination is to enrich people’s lives and to give to others. I spent weekends at our community pool teaching swimming lessons to children, and several years ago I had an opportunity to direct and manage a swim meet competition for the Utah Special Olympics. I have also participated as a Child Life Volunteer at Primary Care Children’s Hospital, and more recently as a Child Life Volunteer at Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital. These experiences have enabled me to test my own boundaries and find my personal motivation. These experiences have prepared me for my service as a Peace Corps Volunteer.

I am not of a mind that I can change the world in a short period of time, but I can improve someone’s world. My passions and cultural experiences allow me to see the world through a set of lenses that are unique, and I believe that I can be an asset to the Peace Corps in a host community. I look forward to taking the highs and the lows of my service and incorporating them into my work environment. The Peace Corps will help me to become a great leader. Serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer has been a lifelong dream and I believe will be forever changed by answering such a call.
